F106Chapter of Dry Ablution (Tayammum)Revised

How Far One Must Search for Water Before the Dry Ablution

Must one who has no water search for it before performing the dry ablution, and how far must the search reach?

Hanafi

Searching for water is required only if he strongly supposes there is water near him, less than a mile off; he then searches as far as a bowshot, without going as far as a mile. If he has no such supposition, he performs the dry ablution without searching.

Maliki

If he is certain there is no water, he does not search; if he is in doubt, he must search what is near him; and if he is certain it is there, he must go for it, so long as the prayer time does not run out and he does not fear for himself.

Shāfiʿī

If he is certain there is no water, he performs the dry ablution without searching; if he merely supposes there may be some, the search is required once the prayer time has come in — in his baggage, among his companions and around him, within the reach of a call, as far as a voice carries. If he knows of water within the nearer distance, he must go to it, if he is safe as to himself and his property.

Hanbali

He must search for water in his baggage, among his companions, and in what is customarily near him; if he finds none, or fears the prayer time will pass or that he will come to harm, he performs the dry ablution and need not go far.
