F11Chapter of Removing Impurity

Purifying impurity with something other than water (detergents, alcohol)

Is impurity purified by liquids and detergents if they remove its substance and trace?

Hanafi

Impurity is purified by any pure liquid that removes it, such as vinegar and rosewater; so cleaning with detergents that remove the substance and trace is valid.

Maliki

An impurity is not purified except with unmixed water; no other liquid takes its place, such as detergents or spirit, even if they remove the substance and the trace.

Shāfiʿī

The impure is purified only by unmixed water; detergents and alcohol do not suffice to lift the ruling of impurity even if they remove the substance.

Hanbali

Removing an impurity is only done with purifying water; it is not purified by liquids such as spirit, even if the substance is gone.
