F12Chapter of the Description of the PrayerRevised

Ruling on Raising Hands During Takbeer and its Places in Prayer

The imams agree on the legitimacy of raising the hands at the opening takbīr, and differ over raising them at the bowing, at rising from it, and over the manner of raising.

Hanafi

Raises the hands until the thumbs are level with the earlobes at the opening takbīr, and does not raise them at the bowing or at rising from it; within the prayer they are also raised for the takbīr of the qunūt in witr and for the takbīrs of the two ʿĪds.

Maliki

The hands are raised to shoulder level only at the opening takbīr, and raising them at the other descents and risings is disliked.

Shāfiʿī

Recommended to raise hands to shoulder level in four positions: Opening, Bowing, Rising from Bowing, and Standing from 1st Tashahhud.

Hanbali

Recommended to raise hands to shoulders or the tops of the ears in three positions: Opening Takbeer, Bowing, and Rising from Bowing.
