F62Chapter on the Description of the Ablution

Ruling on Saying the Basmalah at the Beginning of the Ablution

What is the ruling on saying “Bismillāh” at the beginning of the ablution — is it obligatory or a sunnah?

Hanafi

Saying the basmalah at the beginning of the ablution is a sunnah, not an obligation; whoever omits it forgetfully incurs nothing and their ablution is valid.

Maliki

Saying the basmalah at the beginning of the ablution is recommended, not obligatory, and it is recommended during it for one who omitted it at the start and then remembered.

Shāfiʿī

Saying the basmalah is a sunnah at the beginning of the ablution, with the wording “Bismillāh al-Raḥmān al-Raḥīm”; if omitted deliberately or forgetfully, the ablution is not invalidated.

Hanbali

Saying the basmalah is obligatory in the ablution when one remembers, and it lapses through forgetfulness or ignorance.
