F72Chapter on the Description of the PrayerRevised

The Wording of the Opening Supplication and the Ruling on Saying It Aloud

What is the wording of the opening supplication in each school, and is it said aloud or silently?

Hanafi

The wording is: “Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise; blessed is Your name, exalted is Your majesty, and there is no god but You.” Saying it silently is a sunnah for the imam, the follower and one praying alone, and saying it aloud is disliked.

Maliki

The opening supplication is disliked in the obligatory prayer, and the recitation begins straight after the takbīr; it is permissible in voluntary prayer.

Shāfiʿī

The wording is: “I have turned my face to Him who originated the heavens and the earth, upright and submitting, and I am not of those who associate.” Saying it silently is a sunnah for all who pray, in both the silent and the audible prayers.

Hanbali

The wording is: “Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise; blessed is Your name, exalted is Your majesty, and there is no god but You.” Saying it silently is always a sunnah for the imam, the follower and one praying alone, since saying it aloud was not transmitted from the Prophet ﷺ or his Companions.
