F85Chapter of Ablution NullifiersRevised

Touching the Private Part without a Barrier, and Whether It Breaks the Ablution

Does touching the private part with the inside of the hand, without a barrier, break the ablution?

Hanafi

Touching the private part does not break the ablution in any case, with or without a barrier, one's own or another's — on the strength of the hadith of Ṭalq ibn ʿAlī: “It is only a part of you.”

Maliki

The ablution is broken by touching the attached penis with the inside or the side of the hand or with the fingers, without a barrier, in every case, with desire or without it; a woman touching her own private part does not break it. Touching another person's private part falls under the rule of touching, where intending or feeling pleasure is what counts.

Shāfiʿī

The ablution is broken by touching a human's private part with the inside of the hand or the insides of the fingers, without a barrier — on the strength of the hadith of Busrah bint Ṣafwān: “Whoever touches his private part, let him perform the ablution.”

Hanbali

The ablution is broken by touching an attached private part — the front or the ring of the anus — with the hand, without a barrier, whether with the inside of the hand, its back or its edge, but not with the nail, on the strength of the hadith of Busrah bint Ṣafwān.
