F87Chapter on the Full Bath (Ghusl)Revised

What the Full Bath Requires for It to Suffice

What is required in the full bath for the major impurity to be lifted? Are the intention and the rinsing of the mouth and nose obligatory in it?

Hanafi

The obligations of the full bath are three: rinsing the mouth, rinsing the nose, and covering the whole body with water, including what lies beneath the hair. The intention is a sunnah, not a condition of its validity.

Maliki

The obligations of the full bath are: the intention at its beginning, continuity, covering the outer body with water, rubbing, and running the water through the hair. Rinsing the mouth and the nose is not obligatory in it; both are sunnah.

Shāfiʿī

The two essentials of the full bath are: the intention, at the washing of the first part of the body, and covering the whole body with water, both hair and skin. Rinsing the mouth and the nose is not obligatory in it.

Hanbali

The obligation of the full bath is to cover the whole body with water, with the intention; and rinsing the mouth and the nose, and bringing the water beneath the hair however thick it is, are obligatory with it.
