F89Chapter on the Conditions of the PrayerRevised

One Who Cannot Cover His ʿAwrah in the Prayer

One who finds nothing to cover his ʿawrah: does he pray uncovered, standing or seated, and must he repeat the prayer?

Hanafi

It is recommended that he pray seated, gesturing for the bowing and the prostration, since covering the ʿawrah by sitting is better; he may also pray standing with bowing and prostration, and he does not repeat the prayer.

Maliki

He must pray uncovered and standing, with a full bowing and prostration, and he repeats the prayer within its time if he finds a covering.

Shāfiʿī

He prays uncovered and standing if he is able, with a full bowing and prostration, and he does not repeat the prayer, for he performed what was required of him in his condition.

Hanbali

It is recommended that he pray uncovered and seated, gesturing for the bowing and the prostration, since covering his ʿawrah by sitting is better; if he prays standing with bowing and prostration, that is permissible, and he does not repeat the prayer.
