Questions & misconceptions

Clear answers to what explorers and new Muslims ask most.

It is instant: sincerely pronouncing the testimony of faith — 'I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His Messenger' — makes you Muslim. No cleric or paperwork is required; any later documentation is merely administrative.

No. You can accept Islam in any language you understand and learn the Qurʾān and prayer gradually. Learning some Arabic for prayer is encouraged and helpful, but it is not a condition for becoming Muslim.

Islam erases what came before it. Upon accepting Islam all previous sins are forgiven and you begin with a clean slate, as affirmed by the Prophet (peace be upon him).

You gradually take on the five essential elements: the testimony of faith, the five daily prayers, zakah (for those who meet the threshold), fasting Ramadan, and Hajj for those able. The most immediate priority is learning and starting the prayer.

Their differences are in secondary, interpretive matters — not in fundamentals — and all trace back to the Qurʾān and sunnah; this variety is a mercy and flexibility. A beginner may simply learn according to the trusted scholars of their locale, without partisanship.

No. Islam commands kindness to parents and relatives even if they are non-Muslim, unless they ask you to disobey God. Treating them well is at the heart of the faith.
