F100Chapter of Ablution Nullifiers

One Who Forgot He Was Impure, Prayed, and Then Remembered

One who prayed having forgotten he was without purity — minor or major — and remembered after the prayer: must he repeat it?

Hanafi

His prayer is void, and he must repeat it after purifying — whether he remembered within the time or after it — since purity is a condition that forgetfulness does not lift.

Maliki

His prayer is void, and he must repeat it whenever he remembers, even after the time has passed, since purity from impurity is a condition of validity that forgetfulness does not lift.

Shāfiʿī

His prayer is void, and he must make it up whenever he remembers, on the strength of his saying ﷺ: “No prayer is accepted without purity”; forgetfulness lifts the sin but does not make the prayer valid.

Hanbali

His prayer is void, and he must repeat it whenever he remembers, on the strength of his saying ﷺ: “Whoever forgets a prayer or sleeps through it, let him pray it when he remembers it”; a condition is not lifted by forgetfulness.
