F74Chapter on the Description of the Prayer

The Ruling on Saying Āmīn and on Saying It Aloud after al-Fātiḥah

What is the ruling on saying “āmīn” after al-Fātiḥah, and is it said aloud or silently?

Hanafi

Saying āmīn is a sunnah for the imam, the follower and one praying alone after al-Fātiḥah, and saying it silently is a sunnah in both the audible and the silent prayer.

Maliki

Saying āmīn silently is recommended for the follower and one praying alone; the imam says it silently in the silent prayer and does not say it in the audible prayer.

Shāfiʿī

Saying āmīn is a sunnah for the imam, the follower and one praying alone after al-Fātiḥah; it is said aloud by all in the audible prayer and silently in the silent one.

Hanbali

Saying āmīn is a sunnah for the imam, the follower and one praying alone; the imam and the follower say it aloud in the audible prayer, on the strength of the hadith of Wāʾil ibn Ḥujr, and silently in the silent prayer.
