F48Chapter of the Description of the PrayerRevised

Ruling on reciting a sura after al-Fatiha in the prayer

What is the ruling on reciting whatever is easy of the Qurʾān after al-Fatiha in the prayer?

Hanafi

Reciting a sura after al-Fatiha is obligatory in the first two units of an obligatory prayer and in every unit of voluntary prayer and witr; in the last two units one may choose.

Maliki

Reciting a sura after al-Fatiha in the first two units is a stressed sunnah; it is disliked in the last two and not prescribed in the funeral prayer.

Shāfiʿī

Reciting the sura after al-Fatiha in the first two units is a sunnah for one praying alone, for the imam, and for the follower where the recitation is silent; it is not called for in the last two.

Hanbali

Reciting a sura after al-Fatiha in the first two units is a sunnah; it is not a sunnah in the last two, though if he recites there it is permissible and not disliked; and it is a sunnah for the follower in the silent prayers but not the audible ones.
