Washing the Feet to the Ankles, and Whether the Ankles Are Included

What is the ruling on washing the feet to the ankles in the ablution, and are the ankles part of what must be washed?

Hanafi

Washing the feet to the ankles is one of the obligations of the ablution, and the ankles — the two bones protruding at the joint of the leg and the foot — are included in what is washed.

Maliki

Washing the feet together with the ankles is an obligation in the ablution, and the water must cover them entirely.

Shāfiʿī

Washing the feet together with the ankles is one of the obligations of the ablution, and including them is required — Sūrat al-Māʾidah, verse 6.

Hanbali

Washing the feet together with the ankles is one of the obligations of the ablution, and the ankles must be included, since the Prophet ﷺ did so in explanation of the verse.
